You have to sign up in advance for some open mics and others allow you “show up-go up” and sign up when you get there.
Shows consist of one host, that opens the show and introduces each comic, and 10-30 comics.
The host will post the list the order of comics before the show starts.
Each comic gets 5 minutes (sometimes 3 or 4 mins); the host keeps the time and gives you the “light”, signaling that you have 1-minute remaining.
Most open mics are not clean shows that will allow you to curse and say/do whatever you want. Clean open mics do not allow cursing and material is limited to a PG-PG13 rating.
